In December will UN Climate Change negotiations COP15 be hold in Denmark. Almost every governor of the world will be represented. The aim with the conference is to reach a binding global climate agreement that will apply to the period after 2012 when Kyoto Protocol expires.
For the first time did ordinary citizens get the chance to give their opinion through the happening “World Wide Views” an initiative of the Danish Board of Technology. Deliberations were held on the 26th of September in 38 countries all around the world and around 4000 world citizens participated. The main objective was to give a broad sample of citizens from across the world the opportunity to influence the COP15 negotiations and thereby the future of global climate policy.
The overarching purpose was to demonstrate that political decision-making processes on a global scale can benefit from the participation of ordinary people.
Sweden was represented by Borlänge and around 50 citizens worked out a recommendation to the decision-makers:
Be brave!
Take far-reaching and binding decisions regarding large emission reductions now! Clarify available choices between the gains and sacrifices! Dedicate resources for the development of “smart” climate technology! Establish continuous evaluation mechanisms!
This was the winning recommendation. Another eleven recomendations was formulated and will be given to the candidates of the COP15.
During the day were several questions around the formulation of a new climate deal discussed. 100% of the participants found it urgent to commit a new climate deal. In China did 51% of the participants agree that an agreement should be committed at the COP15 and in Bangladesh was the number 96%.
