Open comparisons has been made in other areas such as health- and nursing, geriatric care and it has been a successful concept. The expectations are now the same for these comparisons used in the public health area.
The report has been put together in collaboration with Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare and the National Institute of Public Health.
Municipalities and county councils have a great responsibility to create good living standards for its inhabitants. The aim with open comparisons in the public health area is to increase the public control and openness about what municipalities and county councils actual achieve and stimulate for improvements in the public health area.
How is the situation today?
The health situation today in Sweden is rather good. There are though some negative trends in the health development. In Dalarna there are eight out of 21 regions that in comparison with the rest of the country have a worse situation.
- It is important to pay attention about what is bad and think about why it is like this. At the same time is the municipality obliged to do something about it and stop all the negative development, says Malin Weinholtz, public health planner at Borlänge municipality.
Malin is not surprised by the result of the Open comparison since it is corresponding to the public plan 2008 of Borlänge municipality.
- I hope now that this report can make us work harder and invest more in the public health, to prioritise and develop the public health in the municipality.
